I read recently that she herself was adopted. Making Gillian an orphan, for some time, perhaps. It gives context and orientation to her music. Particularly that one haunting song, Orphan Girl (the first song I heard by her, made my heart brake and connect simultaneously).
Her songs aren’t always as joyful or whimsical as this, oftentimes more tragic and brooding. But I commend her for her ability to go there. Obviously it is more of a personal (soul) journey to which we are lucky enough to observe.
