the pipeline means nothing
I have lots of things “in the pipeline.” Which is the catch-all phrase for: nothing to show you or myself for what I’ve been doing. Nothing to really be proud of, quite yet. Nothing to have me feel like I haven’t been completely wasting my time. I have very much been enjoying the process. Well, the beginning of the process. I am losing on the refining side of things. I write in a stream and I edit in a drought.
I heard someone say once, “Write Drunk; Edit Sober,” and while I could opine long about giving due deference to the legitmacy of this statement, the basic foundation is what I’m after. Writing is too often the easy part, a constant and steady spew of thoughts, ideas, and words, done even better with a highball of scotch by your side. It is a flow unencumbered. Editing is surgery, precise excision. Scalpel and suture. And I can’t make myself do it on my own.
If any artist, writer, doer of any activity that sees their projects through to completion, has any advice for this distracted soul, please bestow. Thx.
